Clos LaChance Wines

We produce estate-based wines from our 150-acre vineyard property in San Martin, CA.  These wines showcase the diversity of varietals that have popularized the Northern Central Coast region and excited winemaker Stephen Tebb.  “We have taken considerable time and effort to study our vineyard and plant varietals where they grow best.  With so many microclimates, each wine we produce truly embodies the terroir we’re blessed to work with day after day,” says Tebb.  “And, they reflect true varietal characteristics that wine lovers have come to enjoy.”

We produce wines under three categories:

  • Designate.  A limited production of bottlings from exceptional sites that merit the distinction of “Block” or “Vineyard Designate.” These wines include: Biagini Pinot Noir and Erwin Pinot Noir, among others.
  • Reserve. On an annual basis, the winery produces small lots of wines that are worthy of the name "Estate." The fruit for these wines are grown exclusively in our Estate Vineyard and several of CK Vines’ Santa Cruz Mountains vineyard sites.
  • Central Coast. A line of quality and affordable wines from our Estate Vineyard and other select Central Coast locations. Each wine is named after a species of Hummingbird that demonstrate similar characteristics of each wine varietal.

You can also view our wines by varietal.

A beautiful, deep ruby red. Aromas of ripe black cherries, anise, tobacco and clove/cinnamon spice. A hint of sweet vanilla and rosemary. Dried cherries and licorice on the entry with a lush blackberry dominating the mid-palate. Tannins and acid are both very prevalent, yet balanced, which makes this a beautiful wine with food. The finish is long, with hints of currants and again the rosemary.

2008 Erwin Vineyard Pinot Noir
2008 Erwin Vineyard Pinot Noir  -  $50.00

Very purple; with a bit of a watery rim. On the nose I get cola, cherry, earth and mushroom. This wine is so much more like a French Burgundy then a California Pinot Noir. The fruit flavors are secondary to a very complex richness. A bit of truffle, spice, vanilla and cola on the entry. Very subtle red cherries in the mid-palate. Finishes up with soft tannins, solid acidity and a very long, smooth end. The flavors last on the palate for at least several minutes.

The first flavors of fruit to hit the palate are true to the nose. Raspberries, cherries and strawberries. Medium acidity in the mid-palate. Would be great with a rich stew. Moderate tannins balance out the acidity and fruit flavors. A long finish with hints of vanilla and cocoa.

2010 Reserve Muscat Blanc
2010 Reserve Muscat Blanc  -  $16.00

The aromas of the Muscat Blanc jump out of the glass. One of the only wines to truly smell like sweet grapes. Limes and lime rind as well and sweet peaches. On the palate, the limey characteristics carry through along with a hint of white peach and wet stones. Acidity and alcohol balance each other well. The finish is refreshing, with the lime carrying through.

2007 Late Harvest Zinfandel
2007 Late Harvest Zinfandel  -  $19.00

A dark ruby red/purple. Great legs when I swirl the glass, showcasing the higher alcohol level of this wine. The nose emanates dried cranberries, caramel, maybe a little lavender. A hint of dusty cocoa and spice. On the mouth, flavors of dried cranberries and dark blackberries are interlaced with vanilla and peanuts. The sweetness and the tannins are very balanced. This wine would pair nicely with a chochocolate crème brulee.

Qty:

NV Zinfandel Port
NV Zinfandel Port  -  $19.00

2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay  -  $22.00
Pale Yellow, starbright. Aromas of butterscotch, caramel, Pineapple, banana, and toasted marshmallow. A rich, milky caramel flavor meshes well the tropical fruit aspect of the wine. The toasty oak is apparent, but balanced. Mid palate acidity through the finish. The last thing I notice is the minerality component that is so classic Santa Cruz Mountains.

2009 Santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay
2009 Santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay  -  $22.00

The nose on this wine is subtle, but it has a lot of different components. Aromas of apples, pears drizzled with caramel. Banana. A hint of toast and vanilla. Upon the first sip, the caramel and toasty vanilla are prevalent. The ripe pears and apples are showcased in the mid-palate. Smooth, creamy banana is joined once again with the vanilla and slight toastiness in the finish. For me, the three different parts of this wine are very clearly separated, but mesh together nicely.

2010 Reserve Viognier
2010 Reserve Viognier  -  $22.00

Every year that we make wine, the more I am convinced that Viognier would be the most popular white wine if it were not so hard to pronounce. The nose is very distinctly floral. Honeysuckle and stone fruit (peaches and apricots). On the mouth, the floral notes are there, but the peaches and nectarines dominate. The mouth is very rich feeling; viscous. The acids are there, but not dominant. On the finish is a hint of ginger.

Qty:

Deep, rich ruby color. Dark for a Grenache (the 5% Petite Sirah makes a big difference in color!). Aromas of sweet, fresh red berries--strawberries and cherries. Creamy caramel and a touch of rose petal. On the front of the palate, the fruit flavors from the nose come through with the initial taste, followed by bright acids, a classic characteristic for this varietal. Soft tannins and a long finish with hints of vanilla and a bit of baking spice.

Qty:

2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

Will pair nicely with lamb, salmon with balsamic sauce and deep fried turkey.

2008 Estate Malbec
2008 Estate Malbec  -  $35.00

A beautiful dark purple, ruby red. Definitely bright, showcasing its youth. On the nose, I get chocolate covered cherries, a hint of rosemary. Blackberries and a touch of sweet vanilla. Flavors of fresh cherries carry through to the palate, this time couples with a powdered chocolate characteristic. The mid-palate has a depth to it. This wine will pair well with Roast Beef Au Jus. The finish brings back that chocolate along with grippey tannins. A stellar example of this single Bordeaux-style varietal.

Qty:

The palate is consistent with the nose, except for the addition of a little lime rind on the finish.

Qty:

2011 Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc
2011 Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc  -  $15.00

Grown entirely on the Clos LaChance Estate vineyard, this Sauvignon Blanc is actually a blend of SB and Semillon. On the nose, aromas of fresh mown grass, lemon rind and a touch of floral honeysuckle. A hint of peach. On the palate, the citrus flavors jump out of the glass. Lemons and lime. Solid acidity makes this a great pairing with many spicy foods, especially Thai food or Sushi (with plenty of wasabi!). A small amount of Semillon on the finish rounds out the mouthfeel and softens the acidity at the finish. Flavors of lemon rind and a hint of crystallized ginger linger.
